Making the May Lily of the Valley
Lily of the Valley is the birth month flower for May! These elegant little flowers and large green leaves are sure to bring the peace associated with this plant. Stitch this design for yourself or gift it to a friend who was born in May! The May Lily of the Valley is great for beginner and seasoned crafters alike.
Stitches in the Lily of the Valley pattern
Lily of the Valley plants have large, green leaves with multiple, small flowers blooming from a single stem. This pattern reflects the size difference as well as the texture for each part of this plant with different stitches.
To start, we outlined the May Lily of the Valley pattern with split stitch in a light blue. Then, for the large leaves we stuck with a simple backstitch to outline and a running stitch for the veins.
After the leaves, we worked on the stem for the flowers, which we used the stem stitch for. This stitch gives a nice flowing look to the stems and sets them apart from the flowers, which are done with the backstitch again. Finally, we filled in the flowers with some straight stitches in two different colors, Snowflake and Fawn, then added some pollen centers with a satin stitch.
